In many European welfare states (such as Sweden and the Netherlands), the payment of child support after divorce is strictly regulated by law, and there are systems in place where the amount is automatically deducted from the father&#8217;s (or obligated parent&#8217;s) salary. This reduces the risk of mothers (or those raising the child) falling into financial hardship and places importance on protecting the welfare of the child.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, in Japan, the arrangements for child support are often vague, and there are many cases where payments are not actually made, which seems to be one reason for the high poverty rate among single-mother households. There are insufficient social and institutional mechanisms for holding fathers accountable, and I just can&#8217;t accept that the poverty of single mothers is discussed solely as a &#8220;mother&#8217;s problem.&#8221; I believe it is very important to discuss the issues faced by single mothers also as issues of &#8220;irresponsible fathers,&#8221; and to work toward changing society&#8217;s awareness.
